Most of the birds were unknown to us. Only crows seemed familiar. Their beautiful song woke me up every morning. Crows back home are bigger and do not come to my window.

Kiitos ja terveiset Suomeen

Heissan ystavat ja tuttavat. Lyhkaisesti viela isot kiitoksey blogin seuraajille! Kommentit on kivoja! Vaikka aika meneekin vauhdilla, niin on sita toki jo kotiinkin ehditty kaipaamaan. Toivottavasti siella nautitaan kevatauringosta! Alkureissun ajan meille aina pahoiteltiin saata -tuntui, etta myrskyt ja sateet oli ottanut meidat kaveriksi. Mutta nyt on nahty aurinkoakin siina maarin, etta aurinkorasva on tarpeen. Queensland on 'the Sunshine state', mutta ihmiset kutsuvat tata 25 asteen lampoa syksyksi. Matkalla olemme myos oppineet, etta ihosyopa on taalla varsinainen kansantauti- turhaan ei siis aurinkosuojista puhuta meillakaan.

District Conference Dinner

Conference Dinner: Back-to 60'ies. The monster Hippi (=DG Walter) was the first we met at the lobby. I lost again my Angels to that terrible man.
(Later, he asked me to remove the picture, which I did not. Revenge!)










Then came this black-wigged Honey-eater (=Will the Conqueror) and took away Mervi.














I then tried the same. I think now I have better success without the black wig.

So far so good

Greetings from Toowong, Brisbane area. After last week in the hinterland: Gympie and Murgon, we spent the weekend in Caloundra, in the District Conference. It was great to see and catch up with the people we have met on the way. Moreover, we succeeded in giving our presentation that ended up with a Finnish folk song as a thank for all of the ones that have contributed to our trip so far. And during the song Heli, Elina and Martti went into the audience and handed out flowers - so for those that were not there, please find our thank you flower below.



Weeks and days fly past (we normally need a programme to check what day is it and where are we :)). Below you see some photos on the way. We have been to Rainbow beach, Noosa, Murgon, Gympie, Sherbourg, Caloundra and many other places. Our suitcases start to be super heavy, not only with the stuff we have bought, but with all the new experiences gained. From tomorrow on, we have a very interesting week in Brisbane ahead of us. Full programme, with some Koala hugging (Lone Pine Sanctuary) and very interesting career days for all of us. Personally I am really looking forward to visiting the University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology, whereas the others have Coal mines, Westpac Bank, Chamber of Commerce etc. in the programme just to name a few. With sunshine greetings.

...macademia nuts (honey roasted or chocolate covered), ginger, kangaroo meat, good barbeque, excellent wine, cappucino, fresh fruit, Maleny Dairy's choc milk, mud crab, anzac buiscuits...and last but not least, the national food: Vegemite (with a polite yak...)

Siirryimme taas uuteen paikkaan ja lahemmaksi todellista Australiaa suoraan maaseudulle Murgoniin. Huomenna mennaan sikatilalta viininmaisteluun ja taitaa olla Katjan iloksi snakehandling myos ohjelmassa. Heli ja ehka myos mina olemme lupautuneet kokeilemaan milta kaarmeennahka tuntuu.

Thank You Gympie for your hospitality and nice evening with two Rotary Clubs. We had our biggest show so far. Remember the greeting Paivaa. Robin can teach you :)

Hello from Gympie!

Hei, jalleen uusi paikka ja uudet ihmiset, voisi sanoa, etta tama on juuri sita elamisen rikkautta!
Eilen saimme nauttia vauhdista ja vaarallisista tilanteista, kun kurvasimme 4WD autoilla pitkin Rainbow beachia. Wau, mitka maisemat!

Tanaan meilla kaikilla on vocational-paiva, enempi tai vahempi. Mina olen hetken kuluttua menossa ANZ pankkiin ottamaan selvaa heidan markkinointistrategiasta, ja toivon, etta jotakin oppia jaisi myos kotiinviemisiksi! :)

A busy day in Maleny. Another presentation in the club meeting of Maleny tonight. Perhaps for the first time we will have the opportunity to sing our own national hymn, "Maamme-laulu", instead of Australia's, which we have completely not learned yet.

Honiara Hospital, dr. Tenet, and Lunga nurse out there

According to dr. Tenet the most serious diseases taking the patients to Honiara Referral Hospital were Malaria, Diabetes, pneumonia, jus to mention a few. I had the exciting experience and unique opportunity to visit a remote health station of Lunga (suom ääntämisasu lungka)in rainforest area higher up.
The sister there (in picture with her 2 kids) takes care of 5000 villagers scattered in the jungle, all alone! Isn't it unbelievable, in such a small hut.

From Moololaba to Maleny

Time to move on. After some rainy days in Mooloolaba (suom. aantaminen jotensakin: muluulabaa) among just splendid Rotary people, including my host family Bill and Noela Dethlefs, and after hilarious Club meeting including our presentation we were taken to Maleny, away from coast to higher ground (500 m a.s.l) inland, with a magnificent view over the valley all the way to Brisbane and the Pacific Ocean. Intensive programme ahead of us tomorrow, with great expectations in a new environment.
A glimpse of what we have seen comes from Bribie Island in the form of a colourful parrot, with whom I had a chat at John & Daniela Oxenford's doorstep. You will hear more of us later!

Didgeridoo ja kengurut

Huh - takana melkoista haipakkaa. Kokemuksia ja oppia kertyy silla vauhdilla, etta kotiinkin jaa varmasti sulateltavaa. Kun lahdin matkaan, haaveenani oli oppia soittamaan didgeridoota - nyt kuitenkin selvisi, etta aboriginaalien kulttuureissa kyseinen instrumentti on vain miehille sallittu soitin, jonka kautta he mm. kertovat tarinoita ja kommunikoivat perinteita. Vierailimme yhdessa Brisbanen yliopistoista, jossa oli tutkimuskeskus Australian aboroginaalikulttuureista ja uskon, etta vierailu jai meille kaikille hyvin mieleen. Australiassa on lahes 200 aboriginaaliheimoa, jolla jokaisella on oma kielensa ja heimokulttuurinsa. Aboriginaalien tilanne nykyisessa yhteiskunnassa puhuttaa monessa mielessa, mutta oli valtavan mielenkiintoista kuulla heidan kulttuureistaan ja tavoistaan.

Vierailukohteemme ovat olleet varsin moninaiset. Kavimme mm. Brisbanen lentokentalla ja satamassa. Satamasta loytyi maailman ainoa automatisoitu konttikasittely, jota hoiti robottikoneet. Ja mika viela mielenkiintoisempaa, koneet ja osa suunnittelusta oli tehty Suomessa. Lisaksi olemme kayneet kalankasvatuslaitoksella, lintubongausreissulla seka tutustumassa mm. ekorakenteiseen taloon. Ymparistoasiat: jatteen maara, liiallinen vedenkaytto yms. puhututtavat taallakin. Suihkuista voit loytaa neljan minuutin tiimalasin, joka mittaa suihkuun ja vedenkayttoon menevaa aikaa. Tosi kateva keksinto - pistaa omankin vedenkayton rajoihin hauskalla ja hyvalla tavalla. Taytynee tuoda idea myos Suomeen.

Mielenkiintoista on ollut myos kuulla osavaltioiden valisista eroista. Osavaltiot taalla ovat viela melko vahvasti itsenaisia ja hallinnollisesti erilaisia - mm. junaraiteiden koko voi vaihdella osavaltioittain ja esim. koulujen opetussuunnitelma ja aloitusika. ASioita on alettu nyt vieda enemman keskushallinnolliselle tasolle, mutta prosessi on viela pitka.

Ja lisaksi opin, etta kenguruemo voi olla raskaana niin kauan kun on tarpeen...eli jos kuivakausi jatkuu pitkaan, synnyttaa emo poikasensa vasta sitten kun kuivakausi on loppu ja ravintoa on riittavasti. On se luonto ihmeellinen :). Huomenna suuntamme on Sunshine Coast yliopisto seka Australia Zoo, eli kenguru-, koala- ja krokotiilibongausta luvassa. Luonto on taalla kylla varsin varikas verrattuna Suomeen.

Kovasti terveisia ja jatkamme tutkimusmatkaamme :).

Thank you Bribie Island

Greetings from Moloolaba where we arrived yesterday. At this stage we wish to send a big thank you for the hosts on Bribie Island - we really enjoyed our stay and programme. Thr visit to the fishery was very interesting and indeed different as well as many of us were very inspired by the works at the community art centre. Moreover, it was a pleasant experience to do some walking in the nature and see the richness of the wetland nature you have. All in all we are very impressed by all the different projects that Australian rotarians do and the spirit of volunteerism that you share. We hope to meet you in the district conference! KIITOS (thank you)!

Uudet maisemat

Aamulla suunnattiin kohti Bribie Islandia, joka on erityisesti elakelaisten suosiossa oleva kaunis saari Brisbanen pohjoispuolella. Aamulla ennen lahtoa kavimme viela tutustumassa rotareiden Computers 4 kids toimintaan, jonka seurauksena kayttokelpoiset tietokoneet loytavat uuden omistajan. Australiassa harrastetaan monipuolista hyvantekevaisyystoimintaa.
Bribie Islandilla vastaanotto oli lammin seka ilmapiiriltaan etta saalta ja taalla viivymme muutaman paivan. Ehka saamme myos hivenen rentoutua kiireisen aikataulun keskella.

RK Nundah

Eilisen Hamiltonin klubin jälkeen oli keskiviikkona vuorossa Nundah. Hieman vaatimattomammissa ympyröissä (=ei ilmastointia) mutta myös vähemman formaalisessa seurassa. Tunnelma oli välitön ja ihmiset hyvin ystävällisiä. Ennen illan esiintymistä ehdittiin vielä käydä keskustassa hetki shoppailemassa. Sitä ennen kuitenkin tutustuttiin mm. AIMR:AAN (Australian Institute of Medical Research), joka tutkimuskeskus valtavuutensa ja monipuolisuutensa vuoksi teki kyllä melkoisen vaikutuksen kaikkiin.
Huomenna siirrytään Bribie Island'ille.
- Ryhmäpotretti enkeleistä näköalakukkulalta downtownille päin.

Ensimmäinen yhteinen esiintyminen tällä klubilla oli menestys. Oltiinhan sitä harjoiteltu ja Honiarassa, ja esitystä hiottu sen jälkeen nasevammaksi.

Rentoa meininkiä ja hauskaa yhdessäoloa klubin jäsenten kanssa. Oman isäntäperheeni Hugh Springer oli puheenvuorojen jakaja.
Suurenmoisen vieraanvaraisuutensa lisäksi hän on uupumatta uhrannut kaiken aikansa tällä viikolla meidän vierailuohjelmien läpiviemiseksi hämmästyttävällä tehokkuudella.

Hello from Brisbane!

The first week behind us and all this time has gone by so quickly.
The first five days we spent in Solomon Islands. None of our teammembers had never been in Solomon Islands, so it was quite an exotic experience for all of us! After that trip you can really appreciate just simple things like clean water, electricity etc. not mention to mobilephones and internetconnections. In five days we all feel that we learnt a lot of things from the nature and culture of Sololom Islands and we also got a bit of understanding what is like to live in developing country. What a great experience! Thanks to all, who were with us in Solomon Islands!

Now we have settled down to Brisbane and we are looking forward to new experiences!

BBQ at DG Walter's

After having free Saturday in Hotel we were transported by Hugh and others to Walter and Margret Buchanan's house to have reception bbq on Sunday. We even had the pleasant opportunity to meet some of the future GSE team to go to Finland when we would be already back from Australia after easter.

Later on we were taken to our host families, I myself to Hugh and Carol Springer, were after settling down in a most pleasant atmosphere an excellent dinner was served by Hugh and Carol, together with their friends Ken and Ann Donalds, Ken a world famous expert professor in medicine.

Tomorrow certainly rewarding programme has been arranged at the university, where we (Katja, Elina, Mervi and Heli, in addition to me) expect to learn a lot of more. (fig: Will, Margret & Katja)
For Virpi (DG back home) to know her present to Walter and Margret was well received, and thanks and greetings back to Virpi and Matti wished. And our love.
